Building Community Within is a Minneapolis non-profit organization founded in 2009. We are dedicated to serving the local Somali community of Minneapolis through educational programming.
The mission of Building Community Within is to bridge immigrant youth and their families to a brighter and more prosperous future.
Building Community Within provides tutoring and mentoring programs for youth in grades K-12. The goal is to instill a sense of belonging in the students through academic success and achievements. The youth program assists students in all school subjects, with an emphasis on the English language and advancing their reading skills. The program runs year round with afterschool sessions during the school year and extended summer sessions during the day.
A specialized curriculum has been developed for the youth program by Martha Erickson, a licensed teacher from Minneapolis with several years of experience working with Somali students. Her extensive experience enables her to provide academic support and guide the students to develop a sense of community within.
All services offered by Building Community Within are at no charge to the students or their families. As a growing organization we need the support of private donors, grants, volunteers, and community organizations to continue serving the Somali community. Achievement in a student’s life can create the confidence that will lead them to success in their future.
